General Summary:



The primary responsibility of an OSP Field Engineer revolves around the construction and maintenance of plant infrastructure, design, and engineering as well as providing a route analysis of underground and aerial fiber optic installations. These engineers are the backbone of telecom companies since they are the primary designers of the entire fiber network.



Essential Job Functions:


  • Plans and prepares drawings for construction of new, and removal or rearrangement of existing, aerial or underground lines, fiber cables, and conduits to obtain optimum and economical utilization of communications facilities
  • Analyzes traffic loads, available and existing lines, and estimates or forecasts of projected traffic to determine new construction or rearrangements and removals required
  • Selects routing of lines and equipment required for work projects
  • Estimates equipment, labor, and material costs
  • Orders materials and equipment required and directs work activities to ensure conformance with engineering specifications and work authorization
  • Initiates work authorization request and submits request with substantiating drawings and documents to management for approval
  • Maintains a record of all the splicing requirements and topography as well as monitors and manages the fiber splicing
  • Examines the as-built plans and test results
  • Observes and maintain existing and ongoing projects and ensures that everyone follows all network quality requirements
  • Develops mitigation and restoration methods for emergencies conditions such as fiber damages, power failures and other disasters and provides immediate assistance to clients when issues arise
  • Plays an active role in providing a budget for the implementation of designs, new services, technologies and industry requirements
  • Manages the project expenditure, create progress reports, and recommend solutions to management
  • Adheres to the industry standard regarding construction and maintenance of the entire OSP structure
  • Assumes responsibility for the safety and security of the existing OSP facility
  • Delivers project installations within the stipulated time
  • Assumes charge of fiber optic verification and all fiber route mapping activities
  • Maintains customer rapport by listening to and resolving concerns and answering questions
  • Maintains safe work environment by following codes, standards, and legal regulations
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities and reading technical publications
  • Enhances department and organization reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests and exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


  • Has an in-depth understanding of outside plant facilities such as cable sizing, cable counts, and cable records
  • Possesses proper knowledge of CAD and other software applications used to create engineering designs
  • Has ability to identify and rectify OSP engineering problems with innovative solutions
  • Takes action that builds trust with customers and internal colleagues
  • Demonstrative ability to work in a collaborative team environment and communicate effectively
  • Have an in-depth understanding about the outside plant construction techniques
  • Skill in the use of personal computers and software
  • Skill in the use and operation of test equipment and diagnostic software
  • Skill in both verbal and written communication
  • Ability to read and understand technical manuals, schematic diagrams, and related documentation


Education and Experience:


  • Associate degree in a related technical discipline, or the equivalent combination of education, technical training or work experience
  • 3+ years of related telecommunications and/or field engineering experience
