For basic ctsmail.net email accounts hosted on the mail.ctsmail.net mail server.
Email Address xxxxxxx@ctsmail.net  where xxxxxxx is an name assigned by CTSTELECOM, usually your name such as john_smith, john.simth or jsmith
Reply to Email Address xxxxxxx@ctsmail.net  Normally this is the same as the email address but it could be a different address if you so desire.
Incoming Mail Server mail.ctsmail.net also known as POP server
Outgoing Mail Server smtp.ctsmail.net also know as SMTP server
Incoming Mail Type pop3
Incoming Mail User Name xxxxxxx@ctsmail.net This should be the exact same as the xxxxxxx portion of your email address listed above
Outgoing Mail User Name xxxxxxx@ctsmail.net This should be the exact same as the xxxxxxx portion of the your ctsmail.net email address listed above.
Special Note:  for people who have an email address hosted by another Email Server or web site, such as yourname@yourdomain.com,  ie) jim@smithcompany.com.  You may substitute the email and reply email address with jim@smithcompany.com but you will have to know the name of your incoming email server (pop) and you will have to know the Incoming Mail Server User Name login, but you will still use smtp.ctsmail.net as your outgoing mail server (SMTP) and xxxxxxx portion of xxxxxxx@ctsmail.net as your outgoing Mail server user login name.

FOR LAPTOP or REMOTE USERS:  If you travel or wish to access your ctsmail account from a a dial up method you will need to change your outgoing mail server and outgoing Mail User Name (login) to the one provided by the ISP that is providing you with your internet connection.  For an explanation of why we do this see email SPAMMING below.

EMAIL SPAMMING and RELAYING:  Spam is flooding the Internet with many copies of the same message, in an attempt to force the message on people who would not otherwise choose to receive it. Most spam is commercial advertising, often for dubious products, get-rich-quick schemes, or quasi-legal services. Spam costs the sender very little to send -- most of the costs are paid for by the recipient or the carriers rather than by the sender. Relaying is when somebody uses an outgoing mail server to to spam. To prevent email relaying we also look at the IP address of the connection requesting to send email via our server.  If your ip-address is not with in the class of ip’s defined by our “Always on Internet” then we will not allow you to make a connection.   Thus when you make a dial up connection via another ISP it is that ISP who is providing you with an ip-address and thus the responsibility of that ISP to provide you with outgoing mail services, though we will still allow you to read and retrieve your messages on the incoming mail sever of mail.ctsmail.net  If you would like more information on spamming check out this websitete .http://spam.abuse.net/.            back to top--

Email - Outlook - Configuring Multiple Identities

If you need to share your computer with someone else or if you need to use your computer to check e-mail for two different accounts, you will find it easier to set up Outlook Express to use multiple identities.

Creating a new identity

  1. Open Outlook Express as you ordinarily would.
  2. From the File menu, select Switch Identity.
  3. In the Switch Identities window, click Manage Identities. By default, if you have been using Outlook Express with only one identity, you will see an identity named Main Identity listed here. If you have not already changed this to something more meaningful, follow these steps:
    • In the Manage Identities window, highlight Main Identity and click Properties.
    • In the Identity Properties window, type the name, then click OK.
  4. To create a new identity, in the Manage Identities window, click New. Type a meaningful name in the New Identity window. For example, another family member.
  5. Click OK.
  6. In the Identity Added window, click Yes to switch to your new identity. Follow the directions in the Configuring the Outlook Express E-mail Program document or the directions provided by your ISP for configuring your new identity.

Switching Identities

  1. Open Outlook Express as you ordinarily would.
  2. From the File menu, select Switch Identity.
  3. In the Switch Identities window, select the identity to which you wish to switch. Click OK.

Deleting Identities

  1. From the File menu, select Switch Identity.
  2. In the Switch Identities window, click Manage Identities.
  3. In the Manage Identities window, highlight the identity you would like to delete. Click Remove.
  4. In the Warning window, confirm that you wish to delete the identity by clicking Delete.
  5. In the Manage Identities window, click Close.
  6. In the Switch Identities window, click OK.            back to top--

Troubleshooting your "Always on Internet"

The first thing to remember when troubleshooting anything with a computer is to go back to step number one and make sure you do not assume any thing. The big question becomes what is step number one?

Below is a step by step troubleshooting procedure that if properly followed should help you in resolving most problems on your own.  If these step do not work you may need the assistance of a professional and they will probably be worth every penny.
  1. Check to see if your router is on.  The router supplied by CTS Telecom Inc. is a Netopia R3100 or an Adtrans 6100. (Click more in depth information on the Adtran 6100 Router) .  If your router is not one of these, then your router was supplied by you or your Professional installer and you should call the installer for support.  If your system was working yesterday but not today try powering off the router and powering it back on.  This has also been known to help resolve slow running connections and connections that keep getting DNS not able to resolve address, please click refresh or try again.
  2. Check the lights on your network card and the hub or router to make sure the devices are properly connected.  "Most professionals have special test equipment that can test these connections".  CTS Telecom's technicians have experienced situations where the lights on the devices show the cable is good and when it is actually not.
  3. Try to ping your router.  You must know the ip address of your router.  For many of our installation it is 192.168.1.1.   For help on How to Ping your Router.
  4. Check your computer's  network setup and make sure it is setup correctly.  If you have our IDSL Plus5 service your intra-network setup was either done by a Professional Installer" or by somebody in your company.  If this is the case you should call your support person for help.
  5. Reboot your computer if you make any changes to make sure they become active.
  6. If you can ping your router it can normally be assumed that your network physical and tcp/ip protocol are working correctly.  Basically your network wire and TCP/IP configuration is ok.  Now the question is why it can’t talk to the internet.
  7. Now maybe your problem is with a bad DNS entry in your setup or a malfunctioning DNS server.  You can test this by trying to ping the ip address of a web server outside your intra-net.  If you can ping an outside world IP address try typing the ip address into your browser such as:  http://64.136.224.6 instead of the www.ctstelecom.com
  8. If you can bring up a web site via the ip address then re-check your DNS server IP's.  Click here for a help on setting up your DNS server IP's in your network setup.
This troubleshooting document is still under development and is not finished sorry for its incompleteness.            back to top--

Prevention and Elimination of computer viruses
Computer viruses are a continually growing problem. Many people have them and don’t even know they do. A lot of viruses don’t have obvious signs that they are present. Many just tie up system resources and slow the computer speed dramatically. Some damage or erase files on the hard disk. Others record key strokes and screen shots to get credit card numbers or other personal information. New viruses are written and released every day. Getting antivirus software is a good idea these days, and keeping the software updated with the latest virus definitions the software has available is highly recommended.

Types of computer Infections
  • Viruses - A virus is a small piece of software that piggybacks on real programs. For example, a virus might attach itself to a program such as a spreadsheet program. Each time the spreadsheet program runs, the virus runs, too, and it has the chance to reproduce (by attaching to other programs) or wreak havoc.
  • E-mail viruses - An e-mail virus moves around in email messages, and usually replicates itself by automatically mailing itself to dozens of people in the victim's e-mail address book.
  • Worms - A worm is a small piece of software that uses computer networks and security holes to replicate itself. A copy of the worm scans the network for another machine that has a specific security hole. It copies itself to the new machine using the security hole, and then starts replicating from there, as well.
  • Trojan horses - A Trojan horse is simply a computer program. The program claims to do one thing (it may claim to be a game) but instead does damage when you run it (it may erase your hard disk). Trojan horses have no way to replicate automatically.

Spyware/Adware Prevention & Elimination
Spyware, adware, sneakware or malware are all programs that embed themselves deep inside a computer's operating system. Recent tests have shown that over 90% of home PC’s are infected with some sort of spyware, many with hundreds of occurrences. Most  cause windows full of advertising messages, preventing users from accessing any other application. Or, they hide in the background, secretly transmitting information about the user's Web-surfing habits to a server somewhere on the Internet. If the user tries to delete the programs, they replicate themselves over and over.

How does it get on my computer?

Visiting any sort of web pages, you run a risk of picking up spyware without any sort of sign that it was being put on your computer. Annoying pop-ups frequently trick people into clicking yes to install a piece of software they don’t even realize they are installing.

Downloading free software is one of the most common ways. Almost all free software including music sharing services (KaZaa), weather programs (Weatherbug), and internet chat software (AOL Instant Messenger), have numerous pieces of adware that come attached to them. Uninstalling the original program rarely gets rid of the adware that came with it either. Generally it takes a removal tool of some sort to help you dig deep enough to get rid of the sources.

How can I prevent it?
  • Stay away from downloading popular free services software unless you're willing to make the sacrifice.
  • Just say no! to any pop ups that ask you to do something unless you are trying to install a piece of software. Then make sure you read what you are clicking on before proceeding.
  • You can use a small program called a Spychecker that checks software you are about to download for spyware attached to it.
  • Good anti virus programs will catch a lot of spyware right away.
  • Many personal firewalls will not only protect you from hackers, but not let spyware transmit in or out of your computer without your permission. Most spyware can’t function without being to send information out of your computer.
  • Even all of the ideas listed above probably won’t stop all occurrences, so using a removal tool once in a while will make sure your not slowly gathering spyware/adware on your computer.
  • Make sure you continue to download any updates that are available for your spyware/adware removal tool otherwise it won't catch the newer items it may not know about.
